Golden Ribs Finally Open!

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in

As I drove down Grand Ave in Coconut Grove this afternoon I noticed
that finally the sign in Golden Ribs said OPEN!

Naturally I had to get down to visit the brand new location and try
Calvin's (he's been a staple in Coconut Grove for many years sellings
his ribs on the side of the street) ribs and infamous sauce.

Today is their first day open and considered the soft
launch...official grand opening sometime next month. All the items on
the menu are currently not available, but who really cares as long as
the ribs are...

Good BBQ in Miami is hard to come by so due yourself a favor a drop by
Golden Ribs to try somthing truely unique and saucy...not too mention
the people are really nice as well.

SquareBurger

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in , , ,

If you're a foodie in Philadelphia, you know who Stephen Starr is. The man has opened more than a dozen restaurants here in the last fifteen years. This summer, he added a burger stand into the mix. Inspired by the Shake Shack in New York, SquareBurger is located in Franklin Square surrounded by a fountain, a carousel, a huge playground, and an 18-hole mini golf course. Parents may bring their kids for the activities, but they stick around and come back because of the food.

With the square-shaped burgers priced starting at only $4.25, this place is more than affordable. There's something for everyone here- the hot dogs are kosher, there's a veggie burger for the vegetarians, and even a summer love salad for the vegans.

To end the meal, there is a whole list of floats, shakes, and sundaes. The most popular is the Cake Shake- it's a delicious vanilla shake with pieces of Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets (Philadelphia is the home of the brand Tastykake) that you can slurp down with a large straw. SquareBurger has chosen to use all environmentally friendly containers, made from 100% plant materials, with recycle bins on every corner of the park.

If you're ever in Philadelphia, whether you're in the mood for a burger, a hot dog, or a shake- SquareBurger offers you good food at great prices, and the atmosphere isn't too shabby either!

Kingdom of Burger Heaven

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

Kingdom, a great neighborhood bar located in the historic MIMO district of Miami, sells some of the best burgers anywhere. Queen Burger, King Burger or Doomsday Burger.

They also have a food challenge. If you can eat the 2 lb. "Doomsday"Burger (served with what seems to be another lb. of fries and onion rings) within 15 minutes, the meal is free.

Its a great neighborhood bar to watch any sporting event and the kitchen only stops serving once the bar closes so you can enjoy a late night burger. The staff is extremely friendly.

We highly recommend this place as you will not be disappointed...cause it definitely sucks when a burger doesn't live up to expectations.

Filler Up!

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

After a 10-year rest, the infamous Filling Station located in downtown Miami is back and open for business!

This gas-station theme hole in the wall has a renown reputation for their burgers and creative "sedanwiches." Some of their more unique "sedanwich" options include:

  • Mel’s Car…provolone cheese, peppered bacon and tater tots smashed all together in garlic bread
  • Z-28…roasted turkey, ham, loaded mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce on ciabatta
  • Humvee…grilled mahi mahi, lettuce, salsa and pepper jack cheese in a whole wheat wrap
  • Charger…roasted turkey, lettuce, tomato and peppered bacon with pesto mayo on ciabatta
If you're looking for burgers or chicken "sedanwiches" as they call them at the station you gotta check out these options:
  • Mustang…a buttermilk dipped chicken breast, coated with seasoned flour and quick fried to get crispy
  • Super Sport…burger w/ creamy peanut butter, peppered bacon, red onion and lettuce
  • Speed Racer…burger with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, jalapeno jack cheese, bacon and a fried egg
  • Hog…fried chicken topped w/ smoked ham, swiss, peppered bacon and garlicky mustardy mayo
And for those looking to really fill up their tank check out the Big Mac Truck:
  • Howard's Big Mac Truck…A double cheddar burger with fried onions and pickles
We love the originality of The Filling Station and not too mention there is no better combination than burgers and fast cars...

Pasara

The Obama administration is focusing on green technology, and I'm sure they got inspiration from their backyard (Pasara Thai Restaurant in Alexandria, Va), by trying the green curry. The savory blend of green curry, coconut milk, sweet basil leaf make at a very reasonable price, will make your wallet more efficient as you can get an appetizer and entree for around 20 bucks!

The interior decor makes you feel like a diplomat on a business trip to Thailand. Each table has wonderful Thai inspired hand crafting covered in glass, not to mention the Buddha statues and art on the Thai art on the walls.

Rickey's World Famous Restaurant

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in , , , , ,

Located in Hollywood, Florida Rickey's has been a landmark of "Dream City" for more than 40+ years. It is a guys sports restaurant that welcomes groups for any sort of sports events, anything from Nascar down to UFC, you name it. Their wings are a must as well as their seafood and well priced hot dogs options.

It was also great to learn in our visit that this place is closely related to the world history of video games, more precisely Arcade games. Billy Mitchell who had reign in the top of the arcade games world owns and runs the place as well as his famous Rickey's BBQ sauce franchise.

As a matter of fact you can go to www.twingalaxies.com and check out the existing world records and see how Billy is still the Pac Man king (official score of 3,333,360 established in 1999) as well as a top ranker for Donkey Kong (his record1,033,000 points established in 1983, broke very recently by Steve Weibe 1,139,800 who was vastly featured at E3 this year).

This place is worth visiting if you are in South Florida, it has a fun and friendly atmosphere and a 7 days a week happy hour from 11a.m to 7p.m and from 10p.m. to 1a.m. If you want to find more details on how to get here please click here: www.rickeysrestaurant.net

Nat Geo Magazine Wants Your Corn Dogs!

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

National Geographic magazine is calling their readers to submit pictures of the famous state fair food the Corn Dog. This cousin of the much more popular hot dog, is a hot dog coated in cornbread batter and deep fried in hot oils. It's a favorite among the B4B crew.

This unique concoction of meat on a stick can be referenced at times by any of the following names:corn dog, pogo, dagwood dog, pluto pup or corny dog.

There is some debate as to the exact origins of the corn dog. According to Wikipedia, "A number of current corn dog vendors lay claim that credit for the invention and/or popularization of the corn dog goes towards Carl and Neil Fletcher for when they introduced their "Corny Dogs" at the Texas State Fair sometime between 1938 and 1942. The Pronto Pup vendors at the Minnesota State Fair claim to have invented the corn dog in 1941. Cozy Dog Drive-in, in Springfield, IL, claims to have been the first to serve corn dogs on sticks, in 1946. Also in 1946, Dave Barham opened the first location of Hot Dog on a Stick at Muscle Beach, Califorina.

If you're as much of a fan of the corn dog as we are, mark your calendars the first Saturday of March as National Corn Dog Day. This day is not only a celebration for corn dogs, but an overall holiday for basketball, beer and tator tots.

Should you have an interesting picture of your favorite corn dog click here for more information on how to submit your photo to Nat Geo.

Looks like we're not the only ones that love corn dogs...apparently someone in Orange County likes to take a bite.

Pizza Hut slices the Pizza off

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

Last week Yum Brands announced a new direction on their image and marketing future. Probably triggered by the existing economic downturn the company part of the Pepsico group has decided to upgrade their services from simple delivery huts now into now full meal huts.

This Goliath, that contributed to develop and shape the fast food industry during the last 5 decades will be reinvented to "The Hut."

It will be interesting to see how this company will perform when leaving its existing comfort zone (the company launched its first IPO as PIZ) and adventuring into new blue oceans.

Hopefully this risky change (it is important to remember that Pizza Hut is a global iconic brand) can help to boost sales, relaunch its image and keep America's growing FF business flourishing.

Let's see if Jessica minds dropping the pizza...

Say Cheese!

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

The Big Cheese! It is very difficult to locate a good pizza parlor with a college town feel in Miami but look no further.

Serving great pizza and garlic rolls since 1984, The Big Cheese is a great place for a quick bite or a long meal. The staff is friendly (most have been working there for years) and the prices are great. You can order an entire pie or order by the slice. The walls are covered in University of Miami memorabilia (they are official sponsors of UM sports) and you can often see famous athletes eating alongside students and families.

Look out for their most famous patron who can often be seen eating here.

KFC Unable To Eat?

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

It seem as though the Colonel is being restricted by the FCC to use the word "Eat" in their advertisements. According to a report by The Onion, "KFC’s claim that its fried offerings have ‘that taste you’ll just love to eat’ is in direct violation of federal regulations,” acting FCC chairman Michael Copps said. “The word ‘eat’ is legally permissible only in reference to substances appropriate for human consumption. Any implication that a consumer could or should ‘enjoy’ a KFC Crispy Strip fails to meet these standards, and presents an unlawful deception to consumers.”

Ouch...

The Kogi Truck Experience

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

So I just stood in line (with about 30 other people) for 20 mins in downtown LA just to try the much hyped about Kogi truck and I can honestly say without hesitation - amazing!

This interesting combination of Korean BBQ and Mexican traditional snacks such as tacos and burritos truly makes this a unique combination of flavors.

Must have are the sliders and hot dogs (sold out by the time I got to order).

Watch out for Kogi cause this truck is gonna keep on moving.

Tom Hanks recommends In-N-Out burgers to Conan O'Brien on The Tonight Show

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in , ,

Conan O'Brien asked Tom Hanks yesterday on The Tonight Show what he needs to experience in L.A. since he is new to town. Tom Hanks said "one of the true great things about Los Angeles is ... In-N-Out burger". He also spoke about the In-N-Out burger mobile that arrives late at night on movie sets to deliver their delicious burgers.

I heard that one year Tom Hanks was nearly late to the Oscars because he stopped over to have an In-N-Out burger.

Old Miami Cheese Steaks

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

Woody's Famous Steak Sandwich has been serving their "famous" cheese steaks since 1954. Located in North Miami, it has remained relatively unchanged since it first opened. There are still pictures of old Miami on the walls.

The current owners are not the original owners but they have not changed much except they now offer a few more eating options. They still serve good cheese steaks and fries at low prices. It is well worth the visit for a quick and inexpensive lunch.

Obama visits 5 Guys in Washington D.C.

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in , ,

Obama loves a burger. Last time he went on burger run he took Biden with him to Ray's Hell Burger. This time he took Brian Williams from NBC News to 5 guys (the B4B crew loves this place).

Obama ordered his cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, jalapeno peppers, and mustard while Brian Williams ordered his cheeseburger with ketchup only.

Which burger will Obama eat next? In-N-Out?

New York's burger landmark : POP BURGER

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in ,

Recently, a cable business network food industry entrepreneur interview caught my attention. It was a showcase about the New York trend setting burger joint: POP BURGER. Inspired by fast food American classic platters and simple and fresh flavors as a catalyst to do business and have fun. This burger joint is now rescuing and the old formula for doing business : the synergy between food and entertainment. The same tactic used for kids by other chains now in the adult world.

With two locations, the original is located in the heart of the meatpacking district in New York City and the newest addition is in Midtown East. A group of DJs play a wide range of music including rock and roll, top 40, hip hop, house, dance, 80s and even reggae.

A white and simplistic eye catching packaging design is helping this start up gain momentum. Another key element of their marketing has been the different celebrity visits to their two locations in Manhattan , which have increased their awareness across town.

Visit their site and preview their menu. They are launching an online ordering system.

Finally, they take reservations for parties of two to two hundred people, catering to your specific needs of service including open bar, hors d’œuvres, à la carte options and sit-down dinners.

Definitively this is a destination to consider during your next visit to the Big Apple.

The Mighty Cone

Posted by Burgers For Brunch | Posted in

I just came across what might look like the most addicting snack ever...the Mighty Cone. Based in Austin, Texas this mobile food truck is why I insist that no one should ever judge food by the location. Apparently the mighty cone is taking over Austin and although they serve sliders and shakes, the mightiest of them all is the Hot & Crunchy Cone (pix above).

For $5, the Hot & Crunchy is wrapped within a fresh tortilla shell filled with deep-fried avocado, chicken or shrimp, sesame seeds, almonds, chili flakes and cornflakes.

The mighty cone officially launch in March 2009 on South Congress Avenue in downtown Austin. Should you be in the neighborhood you gotta check them out.
